Ever since the game’s initial release, an enduring question for new players in Rocket League has been about the best car to use. The constant addition of new car bodies each season has created an extensive array of options, which can be quite overwhelming for players.
Although the ultimate choice will depend on your personal preferences.
To begin with, let’s look into the factors that distinguish the cars from one another. Each car can be categorized into specific groups based on its hitbox.
In the game, there are a total of 6 hitboxes: Breakout, Dominus, Hybrid, Merc, Octane, and Plank. Their dimensions are displayed below!
Although all cars share the same basic statistics, each hitbox varies in terms of length, width, and height. For instance, the Breakout hitbox boasts the longest length but the second shortest height.
10) Ford Bronco Raptor
How to obtain: This can be obtained currently in the item shop for 1100 credits.
As you can see from the picture above, the Ford Bronco uses the game’s largest hitbox called Merc which is a logical choice considering the car’s size and proportions.
Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that the Merc hitbox isn’t among the most favored ones in the Rocket League community, as only a few players can manage its bigger turning circles.
Despite this, the Merc hitbox proves to be quite effective when playing in the keeper role.
9) Dominus
How to obtain: This can be obtained as an end-of-match reward. If you paid for the game before it was free then this would already be available in the game’s garage.
The Dominus has always been seen as an alternative body type but has also been around since the very beginning of Rocket League’s release as mentioned in the hitboxes table.
Compared to the Ford Bronco above, the Dominus Lacks height which may lead to you winning a lot less challenges for the ball. With that being said, its lower size can make dribbling easier, and with a wider flat surface to hold the ball.
8) Dingo
How to obtain: This can be obtained by receiving the blueprint after an online match.
The Dingo import car body with the hitbox of the classic Octane body type. This body was released a few years ago but has remained a popular choice amongst Rocket League players for its small and nimble body that can move easily around the playing field.
You can get the Dingo body type currently in the Item Shop. However, it could be obtained as a blueprint by playing a match when it was first launched.
7) Delorean Time Machine
How to obtain: Unfortunately this is currently not available to purchase in-game but lots of players are hoping this will return like other DLC cars in the Item Shop in future.
The Delorean Time Machine from the Back to the Future sci-fi series has always been a popular choice. Due to its similar effects with its rocket trail and even during the demolition of the car, the number plate is left just like in the movies!
This car unfortunately can’t be customized like other body types so the wheels, boosts and trail remain stock.
6) Cyclone
How to obtain: This can be obtained currently in the item shop for 700 credits.
The Cyclone body type comes with the Breakout type hitbox which is one of the narrowest and smallest in height.
Pro players are known to choose this body type due to having more maneuverability than classic body types such as the Dominus or the Ford Bronco.
This body type can be customized in all paints except for black.
5) Honda Civic Type R
How to obtain: Unfortunately this is currently not available to purchase in-game but just like the Delorean we are hoping this arrives in the item shop soon!
This body type is popular due to its Engine audio and overall looks. Unfortunately, it looks very small next to other bodies like Octances and Fennecs. Such size differences has led to some people thinking the hitbox is actually bigger than the body itself!
This was added to the game in 2022 in Rocket League’s Season 8 content update. This body also incorporates the Octane hitbox due to its small form factor.
4) ’99 Nissan Skyline GT-R
How to obtain: This is currently not available to purchase. Rocket League players hope it will appear in the Item Shop when the next Fast & Furious movie is released.
The ‘99 Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 body was first released in Rocket league in 2017 but made a return in the Fast & Furious bundle to help promote the popular movie car franchise.
This is one of the most sought-after car bodies in all of Rocket League as the bundle is no longer available.
Some avid fans have gone as far as to buy accounts that have this body type!
3) Breakout
How to obtain: This can be obtained in the game by completely offline or online rocket league matches and will appear as a reward when the match finishes.
The Breakout body type has the longest hitbox in the whole of Rocket League, while also being the shortest. It also has a very similar futuristic version called the Breakout Type-S.
This is also a popular choice for playing extra modes such as Hoops and Snow Day as its low body can chip the Basketball, as well as hold the Puck while traveling up the playing field.
2) Fennec
How to obtain: This can be obtained by trading with players in the game, building it from a blueprint unlocked at the end of online matches, or received as a rare loot drop.
The Fennec body gained popularity as the “New Octane” as it uses the same hitbox but was released a few years after its release in 2019.
Players like to use this over the Octane due to its bigger and bulker frame, making it easier to get more power behind the ball.
The only disadvantage for the Fennec is the car feels slower and clunky like a Merc. However, even with this flaw, this body still remains one of the most popular choices in the game!
1) Octane
How to obtain: This is one of the three body types and automatically unlocked at the very beginning of the game.
The Octane body type is the flagship car used from the very first day of Rocket Leagues release and has remained a staple within the game with most pro Rocket league players choosing this when battling in Esports tournaments.
For this reason this body type was rumored to have the best hit box due to the developers testing the game using the Octane and still remains the most selected car in the game.
Final Thoughts
As mentioned at the start, the best body type could depend on a few things:
- Playstyle
- Preferred hitbox size
- Gamemode
You may want to use a car that can chip the ball when playing Hoops. Alternatively, you can play with a bulkier car in the Snow Day mode to control the puck more efficiently.
Body types that are available can all depend on what’s available in the Item shop, getting lucky from a loot drop or waiting for a blueprint reward after an online game. You can check out what’s currently available in the item shop using this link – https://rocket-league.com/items/shop
